Venture Cafe brings together startup founders and investors, research institutions and government agencies – providing a dynamic and inclusive forum to road test ideas and connect with the right talent, clients and funding. It has activated 20 local innovation ecosystems across the globe, including Cambridge (MA, USA), Tokyo and Berlin. Through its signature “Thursday Gatherings” and other tailored local programming, the Venture Cafe international network convenes around 100,000 participants annually.
ARIA is partnering with Venture Cafe across its first three UK hubs and will be a co-host of Venture Cafe London’s weekly “Thursday Gathering” open networking events. ARIA is an R&D funding agency set by the UK Government to unlock transformative scientific and technological breakthroughs for the UK and the world.
The UK’s first Venture Cafe will be in London, which is one of the world’s most advanced startup ecosystems, second only to Silicon Valley. Yet every innovation ecosystem, no matter the size, needs ‘activators’ to facilitate connections, nurture collaborations and drive momentum. Moreover, with the sharp increase in remote work since the Covid-19 pandemic, startup founders cite isolation as a key challenge that can hold them back.
Matt Clifford, Chair, Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA):
“For groundbreaking ideas to flourish, they rely on more than funding. They need bold thinking, challenge and serendipity – all in the right rooms. ARIA’s partnership with Venture Café UK is about creating those environments. At ARIA, we’re unlocking new pathways to scientific and technological breakthroughs, backing the audacious ideas that will shape the future. Venture Café brings the energy, collaboration and openness that helps transform those ideas into movements that can deliver real-world impact.”
Tim Rowe, Chair and Founder, Venture Café Global Institute:
“Collaboration is innovation’s greatest ally – the best idea in the world cannot flourish in a vacuum. At Venture Café, our role is connecting the key players and creating the ideal conditions for those ‘aha!’ moments that fuel momentum and progress. The UK is already buzzing with know-how, talent and ambition – we’re here to help connect those dots and facilitate the tech breakthroughs of the future.”
The Venture Cafe London launch event will be held on Thursday 15th May at FORA’s The Jellicoe Building at Kings’ Cross. Agenda highlights include:
Panel and Q&A with Venture Cafe’s Tim Rowe and ARIA Chief of Staff Dan Cole

Emerging Technologies: A Global Pulse on Innovation
As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of technology, our weekly innovation events across eight cities around the world offer a unique window into the collective foresight of our community. Last night’s survey of 658 attendees revealed striking insights into what they believe will be the most impactful emerging technologies in the next five years. By breaking down these insights, we can better understand the differing perspectives across startups, investors, corporates, and other sectors.
Dominance of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerged as the clear frontrunner, with an overwhelming majority across all sectors predicting it to be the most impactful technology. Notably, 63.45% of startups placed their bets on AI, highlighting their confidence in AI’s transformative potential to disrupt industries and create new market opportunities. This enthusiasm is closely mirrored by corporates (56.47%) and service providers (57.14%), indicating a broad consensus on AI’s future dominance.
Varied Interest in Biotechnology and Personalized Medicine
While AI’s dominance is evident, biotechnology and personalized medicine showed significant but varied interest across different sectors. Academia (14.55%) showed a strong inclination towards biotechnology, likely reflecting ongoing research and innovations in this field. Investors (12.12%) and service providers (7.79%) also showed significant interest, underscoring the economic and strategic importance of clean energy innovations.
Mixed Views on Quantum Computing
Quantum computing, often touted as the next frontier in computational power, received varied responses. Investors (9.09%) and students (7.89%) expressed notable interest, likely due to the high-risk, high-reward nature of investments in this field. Conversely, its appeal was less pronounced among corporates (4.71%) and startups (6.21%), possibly reflecting the technology’s current nascent stage and the substantial R&D investments required.
Robotics and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (XR)
Robotics garnered substantial interest from government respondents (20.00%) and corporates (11.76%), indicating a belief in its potential to revolutionize manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (XR), while less prominent overall, found a niche interest among government respondents (5.00%) and other sectors (5.71%), suggesting potential applications in public services and niche markets.
Blockchain’s Niche Appeal
Blockchain technology, despite its transformative potential in finance and beyond, received modest support across all sectors. The highest interest came from service providers (7.79%) and academia (5.45%), pointing towards ongoing exploration and implementation of blockchain solutions in these areas.
A Comparative Perspective
Startups vs. Investors: Startups displayed a stronger inclination towards AI (63.45%) compared to investors (42.42%), reflecting startups’ agile nature and focus on cutting-edge technology. Investors, while recognizing AI’s potential, showed a more balanced interest across other technologies such as renewable energy (12.12%) and robotics (12.12%).
Corporates vs. Government: Corporates leaned heavily towards AI (56.47%) but also showed significant interest in renewable energy (10.59%) and robotics (11.76%). Government respondents, however, placed a higher emphasis on robotics (20.00%) and renewable energy (10.00%), reflecting public sector priorities in sustainable and advanced technologies.

Academia, while also favoring AI (56.36%), showed greater diversity in interests, particularly in biotechnology (14.55%) and personalized medicine (7.27%), highlighting ongoing research and development in these areas.
Conclusion
The survey results paint a vivid picture of the technological landscape as seen through the eyes of a diverse global community. While AI stands out as the most anticipated technology, the varied interests in biotechnology, renewable energy, and quantum computing reflect a rich tapestry of innovation that promises to shape our future. Understanding these perspectives not only highlights the current trends but also provides a roadmap for stakeholders to navigate the complex terrain of emerging technologies.
Venture Café is excited to announce its newest location, Berlin, Germany, set to open at CIC’s latest Innovation Campus, CIC Berlin. Scheduled to debut in late 2024, Venture Café Berlin will serve as a dynamic hub for the local and international innovation community with free high-impact programming and events.
Established as a non-profit by CIC in 2009 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Venture Café’s mission is to connect innovators to make things happen. Today, Venture Café operates independently with 15 locations around the world with more in development, including an upcoming launch in Fukuoka, Japan.
Building on the successful model used around the world, Venture Café Berlin will activate the innovation ecosystem through a robust lineup of programming and events, including its flagship program the Thursday Gathering. In 2023, the Venture Café global network welcomed nearly 100,000 visits at 460 events featuring 2,800 speakers. “Berlin represents a significant step in our mission to connect innovators globally. We are excited to bring our proven model to this vibrant city and look forward to fostering a thriving innovation community here,” said Kristen Plymale, Global Growth Director, Venture Café Global Institute.
This launch marks an exciting milestone for CIC Berlin, which opened its doors earlier this year. The 14.000m2 square meter campus features a diverse mix of private offices, shared workspaces, event facilities, and amenities. By leveraging its expertise building and growing innovation ecosystems, CIC intends to bolster Berlin’s key sectors, including transport, logistics, mobility; energy technology; media and creative industries; and healthcare.
“Our new Innovation Campus in Berlin is designed to be a nexus for creativity and collaboration. Partnering with Venture Café allows us to enhance our impact and support the incredible talent and ideas emerging from Berlin,” stated Jakub Jozwicki, General Manager, CIC Berlin.
The launch of Venture Café Berlin would not be possible without the strong support of the local community. To learn more about Venture Café Berlin and how you can get involved, sign up for the newsletter here.
CONNECTING
Oneal never meant to become a Venture Café Philadelphia regular, but little did he know he would become a dedicated ambassador and most recently a speaker. Oneal heard about Venture Café Philadelphia from a friend in March of 2019. His intended one-time trip to 3675 Market Street has turned into 13+ visits to VC Philly.
His second visit was our Cannabis night, where he saw his field in action and learned more about the infancy of the Cannabis industry in Pennsylvania. Since his foray into the Venture Café community, Oneal has launched his consulting business in Philadelphia, taking on various projects, many of which have been sparked by “serendipitous collisions” at the weekly Thursday Gatherings and knowledge from Venture Café. To him, Venture Café Philadelphia has been a “trampoline to get to the next level” and could be the same for anyone who is prepared for these conversations.
INNOVATORS
If asked about his superpower, Oneal would say he can connect dots that others can’t see. You can regularly see him smiling behind the kiosks and making introductions among new (1)s (will people know right away what 1s means or should we say first-timers?) and regulars every week. Connecting people and dots is not new to Oneal; he has done this throughout his career.
Oneal, a West Philadelphia native, served in the U.S. Army and then moved to California to work in the technology industry. After a couple of years, he did a 180०, moved to Northern California and became immersed in the farming and agtech industry, ultimately sparking an interest in the hemp industry. Today he is the founder and CEO of Eastern Hemp Company and recently gave a fireside chat on “Growing a Local Economy” with Judy Wicks.
TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN
Oneal came into our #ThursdayGatheringPHL with ideas and put them into action by collaborating to launch projects across the city and state. First, Oneal has been consulting with Nottingham Farms in Chester, PA to become a regional hemp producer. He hopes to bring this technology and ideas to more parts of the region. Secondly, Oneal is an active member of the Proud Pennsylvania Hemp Local Supply Chain Coalition. Their goal is to keep hemp production local to Pennsylvania; this includes everything from the growing to the production to the selling of the goods. His personal hope is that “hemp can be Pennsylvania’s product” and help boost the local economy.
Oneal’s advice to newcomers is “You have to be ready for the random conversation that could change your life,” and he has brought this mentality into his entire Venture Café experience. SO be ready for those random conversations, who knows how they might change your life.
If you want to share your story with the Venture Café Community, please contact hello@venturecafephiladelphia.org and we look forward to seeing everyone each and every Thursday at 3675 Market Street from 3-8pm.
Cheers, The Venture Café Philly Team

Shadia Bel Hamdounia is a frequent visitor of the Quorum drop-in lounge, have first toured the building and learned about Venture Café after receiving an invitation to attend the November 2018 Grand Opening. Initially, she was slightly skeptical, thinking all the described Venture Café offerings sounded too good to be true. She decided to check it out to attend the diverse sessions and to network with and learn from others in the community. Shadia is now a #VCjawn regular, having been to 25+ gatherings, and is making quite the serendipitous collisions here.
As a strategic consultant in Scientific Medical Marketing, when Shadia saw on the schedule a talk on “Compelling, Scientifically Credible Data Graphics for Communicating with Investors and Clinical/ Scientific Advisory Boards”, she felt she could not have asked for a presentation more relevant to her work. When she entered the room, she saw a colleague of hers who jokingly asked if she was there to give the talk. That got everyone chuckling and a round of interdictions kicked off by the presenter, Miklos Schulz, the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Consultant of SCiAN, a contract research organization (CRO). As the session went on and Shadia was asking questions and contributing to the development of the conversation, Miklos joked that maybe he should hire Shadia…, and shortly after she began her first project.
INNOVATORS
Miklos thought CIC at 3675 Market Street was a great location to host his SCiAN USA office because of the many resources of the Science Center including SCiAN enrollment in the Global Soft Landing Fellowship program and ample opportunities for networking with other professionals. He felt this was reflected through Venture Café, and when attending had the impression it was nice to see related fields, energetic people, and a variety of presentations offered. Miklos believes that it is important for attendees to ask questions and contribute to the conversation, and that this builds connections and could lead to bigger, bolder things, like a job offer.
TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN
Shadia came to Venture Cafe, with some skepticism, and she’s been coming back (almost weekly), ever since. The focus on space and community cultivation is her favorite element and she believes it is one of the biggest contributing factors of #VCjawn’s success in fostering serendipitous collisions. Shadia mentioned that Venture Café does a really good job of showcasing different industries, at a granular level, but also of keeping content understandable to general audiences.
Shadia has now been working on strategic marketing projects for Miklos at SCiAN for 6 months. With a couple of completed and a couple more on the horizon, she anticipates the relationship will continue. Shaida also anticipates that her relationship with Venture Café will continue, noting “It [Venture Café] has earned a standing spot in my calendar”.
